Outreach & Service Opportunities
Community Life
Community Life allows students to drop their guard and be real, a
nd at the same time build friendships that go beyond the doors of St. Stephen's Catholic Stude
nt Center. Wild and fun activities are always available; including roller-skating, hay rides,
camp outs, movie nights, and many more.
Social Justice
Those individuals involved with Social Justice will explore a variety of social
justice opportunities since it is a new area for the Discipleship Council. One of the main
areas of focus will be Pax Christi, an international peace and justice organization. Some
others may involve working with Hospice, Right to Life, hosting a Hunger Banquet to
illustrate the HUGE hunger problem in our world, a Spring Clean-up day to assist the
homebound, and coordinating a blanket/coat drive for those without. This is an exciting
and diverse new area that will hopefully educate and help many different people.
"Chalk Squad"
The Chalk Squad is a group of UNI students from St. Stephens
that live in the residence halls. They represent St. Stephens to all
of the people in their hall. As a member of the chalk squad they help get the word out
about upcoming events at St. Stephens. They also get to know the
people in their halls and help with questions people may have about St. Stephens.
Blood Drive
Volunteers are utilized to help with the Red Cross Mini-Blood Drive sponsored each year at St. Stephen's. We also need at least 30 volunteers to roll up their sleeves and donate blood. All donors are scheduled for a specific time to insure a timely process. This semester the blood drive is November 8th 2-6pm. You can register on line at www.givelife.org
El Faro Connection
El Faro is a group that strives to give Christian witness to the value and dignity
of human life, by empowering the communities of St.
Stephen's and El Faro in developing ongoing solutions for El Faro's financial,
educational, and spiritual needs. El Faro is an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico that is
in need of help financially and spiritually. In March of 2001, four members from St.
Stephen's were sent down to see if our community could help this orphanage of 70
children. Upon our return a committee was formed, and we started the El Faro Water
Project. Enough money was raised during the water project, to give El Faro clean,
life-giving water for 2 years. Our goal for the St. Stephen's community and El Faro
is to develop a more personal relationship. The project that we are currently
working on is writing letters to the children of El Faro once a month. Each child
has been paired with a member from St. Stephen's to help build a stronger
relationship between the two communities.
Adopt A Grandparent
Adopt a Grandparent is an outreach area here at St. Stephen that spends time doing
various activities with residents at the Western Home
We carpool to the Western Home once a month and spend about two hours doing various activities with the residents. The time we spend there is always a lot of fun. The residents enjoy it and it really
gives the students involved a sense of purpose. Our next event is on October 31st and we will help the resisdents give candy to the trick or treaters. Meet at the student center at 5:45!
Catholic Worker Meals
Each month this committee gets together and prepares a meal for the staff and
guests at the Catholic Worker House. Generally, the dinner is the last Monday of the
month and 20-30 people are served. A menu is planned early in the month and a sign
up sheet is hung on the bulletin board for food donations. Food is dropped off the
day before the Monday of the meal. Preparation begins at 3:00 in our kitchen. After
preparing the meal, we leave St. Stephen's at 5:00 and serve the meal at 6:00.
