We gather volunteers once each semester to clean our "adopted" section of highway on Hudson Road.
Annual Social Justice Speaker
In order to educate and create awareness, we offer speakers on current social issues on an annual basis.
Catholic Worker House
Volunteers are needed monthly to donate food, prepare and serve the meal, and visit with guests at the Catholic Worker House, Waterloo, Iowa.
El Faro Connection (Advent El Faro Tree)
Sr. Mary Lou Specha, along with the students and community members, started a relationship with Corazon de Vida and the children of El Faro around 1998. In the past, groups have traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, collected supplies needed for the children's home, and provided financial resources. The Advent Giving Tree is an annual collection where donated money, via envelopes hung on an evergreen tree, is used to pay for the monthly tortilla a expenses for the children of El Faro.
The social justice campus minister and peer minister research, plan, and publicize an almsgiving project during the Lenten season. The money is collected during Holy Week and donated to a new charity each year.
Northeast Iowa Food Bank
Volunteers are needed monthly to help assemble snack bags for the backpack program which benefits children in the Cedar Valley. Other duties include pulling orders, marking products, and stocking shelves.
Thanksgiving Food Baskets
Each November, we solicit help from our students and community members to purchase and donate items listed on Thanksgiving dinner menus, collect the food items, and deliver 225+ food baskets to families in need in the Cedar Valley.
Each year, the social justice outreach offers 1-2 service retreat experiences during spring break. The services often take place in the Midwest and offer opportunities for prayer, service (charity), and education - all to create awareness relating to a variety of social issues.
Social Justice 101
Offered once each semester, the social justice campus minister will offer an introduction to social justice, the two feet of love in action, and Catholic Social Teaching flowing from a concern for the common good and the life and dignity of the human person.
